Sunnyside Mall Uptown is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, volunteer-led organization dedicated to creating a welcoming, safe, and vibrant public space in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. It encourages residents to take pride in their shared “front yard,” fosters inclusivity across cultures, and strengthens community bonds through gardening, green space maintenance, and regular social events. As one of only two unique public right-of-ways in Chicago, Sunnyside Mall serves as both a gathering place and a hub for neighborhood connection.
Our Board is a dedicated group of community leaders committed to guiding Sunnyside Mall’s mission of inclusion, resilience, and neighborhood pride.

History of Sunnyside Mall
Sunnyside Mall was created in the early 1970s after the displacement of hundreds of Uptown families to build Truman College. Though the city offered the Mall with little planning or support, residents transformed it into a symbol of resilience during a time of housing loss, instability, and community struggle. In 1976, neighbors organized the first of 15 annual Survival Days, reclaiming the Mall as a safe, inclusive space. These celebrations brought together over a thousand people of all ages and backgrounds for music, food, health fairs, youth-led cleanups, and campaigns for affordable housing and community health. Today, Sunnyside Mall stands as a living reminder of Uptown’s endurance, diversity, and the ongoing fight to preserve affordable housing and community space for all.
